Not only will you have a natural visual representation of your goals but you can easily adjust or re-group them with just a few clicks of the mouse; you never have to redraw your Mind Map! You can also drill down further into your Mind Map for more detailed planning.
Let's find out how you can do this!
(1) Brainstorm Your Main Goals
Spend as much time as you need to brainstorm your main goals. Use the iMindMap Goal Setting template and base your goals around these main themes:
' Career/Business ' Think about what level you want to reach in your career? Do you want to change careers? If you are running your own business, what are your desired levels of market share, profit, service and quality in the long term?
' People ' How do you want your relationship with your partner to develop? Do have any aims in relation to being a parent or improving your parenting skills? What sort of relationship do you want with your extended family and friends?
' Wealth/Finances ' What are your goals regarding your personal finances? How much do you want to earn by a particular stage? Do you have any goals for gaining passive income?
' Physical/Health ' Are there any athletic or health goals that you want to achieve? For instance, do you wish to lose a certain amount of weight or establish a specific physical training programme?
' Growth/Personal Development ' Is there any particular knowledge, education or training that you want to acquire? What information and skills will you need to achieve other goals? For instance, you may want to learn a language or develop your abilities at public speaking.
(2) Make goals SMART
Once you have decided your goals for 2010, you need to get a little more specific. Ensure each of your goals follow the SMART guidelines (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-based).
This will make them become very powerful and totally achievable. It is important to be precise and include dates, times, targets and amounts for your goals so that you will be able to measure your achievement. Add the following branches to each goal:
' Now ' Your current situation.
' Target ' What exactly do you want to accomplish? Try and be specific regarding any targets or amounts.
' When ' Establish a time frame.
(3) Actions
Now you are ready to outline the steps and actions that you will take to achieve your goals so add a new branch entitled 'How'.
Break down the tasks that you need to carry out to achieve each goal. If you want to go into further detail, you can set time-frames or milestones for your tasks allowing you to measure your progress.
(4) 'To-Do' Mind Maps
You can go even further to create a daily or weekly 'To-Do' Mind Map of the things that you should do to work towards your main goals. This will help to improve the practicality of your goal setting as you will quickly identify any changing priorities or experiences. You can then adjust your main 'Goals' Mind Map to reflect these changes. What's more, as Mind Mapping paves the way for a free flow of ideas and associations, you could end up discovering new innovative ways to reach your goals.
(5) Reviewing your Goals
Your goals will change as time progresses and so it is important to periodically review your 'Goals' Mind Map and modify it to take into account any growth in your knowledge or experience. On a more regular basis, maintain the balance in your life by updating your action plans or 'To-Do' Mind Map frequently.
REMEMBER!
Every time you achieve a goal, review your Mind Map and adjust it to match your new perspective. For instance, if you achieved the goal too easily, make your next goal in that area a little more challenging. However, if the goal took a disheartening amount of time and effort to achieve, make the next goal a little attainable. If you fail to meet your goals, don't be discouraged, just learn from your experience and feed any lessons gained back into your Mind Map. If particular goals no longer hold any attraction, then simply remove them from your Mind Map and focus your attention on goals that you are eager to achieve.
